Today’s forward-looking mobile network operators are exploring ways to reduce operational costs and increase agility by incorporating new architectures that have already transformed their IT infrastructure. Network operators have improved operations by using technologies like Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in their core networks, and now they want to apply these learnings to 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) deployments. RAN infrastructure is a significant cost component of mobile networks, and optimization becomes even more critical considering the need for densification for coverage and capacity in 5G network deployments. Over a 5 year period, we estimate that virtualized 5G RAN has a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than a traditional hardware-centric 5G architecture. Moreover, MNOs can leverage vRAN architectures for greater flexibility and efficiency in deploying, managing and optimizing networks driven by software based radio functions. This paper points to the benefits of vRAN deployments and offers considerations for MNOs in choosing how to deploy the most advanced 5G networks.
